How I did start writing?
I always liked to write as a child. I started writing some pamphlets from 16– 40 pages for my publishing firm; J. O PECULIAR PUBLISHING HOME, a traditional Printing Press at the age of 23.
I’ve always written, but initially, journalism terrified me, and so, despite much encouragement from God Almighty; using some of my friends, Pastor Samson C. Okuwe, and some few family members.
As the economy goes bad in Nigeria. I’ve developed my online newspaper; WE ALWAYS LEARM MAGAZINE AND an eCommerce blog, JOHN MARK SALES
What’s the best technique you used to level up and get better clients?
I’m not as good at this as I should be. I admire what am doing. This what do that have been giving me That’s really the best way to make a sustainable living as a freelancer/journalist: constantly build a portfolio and put yourself out there.
For me, many of my jobs came out of things I already loved; such as writing books, publishing books, and advertisement of books. This gives the connections built in from my passions.
What advice do you have for freelancers looking to build their careers?
However, writing, it’s important to self-advocate. Put yourself out there for jobs, demand the money you want, and don’t let people dissuaded your voice.
I did an advertorial copy for a few months, or daily, and I understood that what I was writing was for my audience.
So I approached it differently, but I also worked in a documentary on a project where I felt the parent company distorted my source’s story.
Why?
It wasn’t just about me, but also about:
- Trust; Is this a perfect write-up, what of the source, and does it follow the research process?
- Readability; The manner things were written are they legible or readable by the audiences.
- Expertise; Does the choice of words usage shown that he/she is an expert in the field, or in the presentations of each write-up in the blog post clear?
How did you been making it financially?
A good starting point is to show clients the value you’re providing. For example, research has shown that WHAT’S APP started by giving its clients around services free. Until one day, it was sold to Face book owner for $1 Billion.
When I looked at my work for one client, I realized I was doing way more than we originally agreed.
The same thing to most of my blog posts. People gave a wow comment. I really believed God, the Creator and Maker of the universe will smile on me one day.
What’s the best technique you used to level up and get better clients?
You just have to sit down and work. Before I started getting paid to write, I had a lot of experience, but not the right kind. I started writing for free on as many websites and blogs as you could.
The way I see it, getting paid in experience is worth it.
I have learned greatly from problogger.com, freelancer.com, medium.com, book mechanic.com, and lots more. Some of their ways we’ve been writing bids/pitches. Ways to apply for a client job, and be able to meet deadlines.
What advice do you have for freelancers/ young journalist looking to build their careers?
It’s about working with a client and giving them exactly what they need when they need it. You’ll have great experiences and you’ll have really tough ones.
I was lucky to sign on with one client within a week of each other. It was great, he paid well, communicated often, and gave me great feedback as we went; It was a partnership.
I’ve learned something new. No matter how much experience you have, you never really stop learning. So just keep writing. It’s not always going to be fun.
You’re going to make mistakes. That’s how you learn. As long as you keep going, it will get easier with time.
